My April Fool’s Day was saved by a tasting at Belmont Station. My darts team, the illustrious Fart Duckers, were scheduled to play another Thursday at what I now consider Portland’s worst bar: the Triple Nickel.

Last week, I sampled Blue Boar, unwilling to sacrifice more common beers (Anchor Bock, Sierra Nevada, Lagunitas IPA) to the project since they would not likely be in their peak form at this sad excuse for a beer bar.

I have reason to suspect substandard beer treatment mostly due to substandard patron treatment in the form of exposed wiring, dangerously precarious large-screen TVs, hanging, water-stained ceiling tiles and insulation literally coming out of the walls. This place is one spark away from a complete burn-down, and someone told me that the reason two-thirds of their almost twenty taps are unused is that the refrigerator floor can’t support the weight of more than a few kegs.

Thankfully, I needed to re-stock Belmont Station with more 33 Beers books, and accidentally walked into a tasting of this beer, a collaboration between three of my favorite California breweries. No joke.

I had this beer twice in the last month or so, and I found it incredibly interesting and unique. You might have got a slightly younger version, or maybe I just liked it more. I agree there was a disjointed aspect to all the different crazy flavors coming together, but, man – those crazy flavors! Really packed with tastes that make you think. I highly recommend to anyone who wants a unique experience.
