This is a good example of why I love this project. Being constrained to trying 999 unique beers in 999 days, I have to try some new things. Normally, I’m a bit of an “ale snob,” by which I mean that I prefer ales to lagers. In particular, I’m not a fan of Pilsener-style lagers, probably due to some bias I developed in college, where I drank more than my fair share of vaguely beer-flavored water. But this beer was a delight – I would actively seek this out again, particularly on a hot day. It’s got enough hops to keep it interesting, and not so dry that it actually makes you thirstier after drinking than you were before.

It’s been awhile since I had it, but I wonder how this would compare to New Glarus’ Spotted Cow … could this Pilsener have corn in it?

  2. Erik Arneson says:

Was this Caldera’s Lawnmower Lager? I think they have a Pilsener, too, but I can’t quite recall. Anyhow, the Lawnmower Lager is available in 22oz. bottles now, and you’re right, it’s a really refreshing beer.

And Dave, Pilseners usually don’t have corn in them.

  3. Dave says:

I know they don’t have corn traditionally, but sometimes a brewer likes to snub the nose of the big fellows (who do tend to use corn in their macro lagers) and make a fine-tasting version. Cool blog, Erik! I tried smoking a pipe for about two days in college, but it didn’t take. ;)

    Thanks, Dave!

Can you give me an example of one of these corn-carrying Pilsners? I’d love to try one.

  5. Dave says:

The one I was thinking of was the New Glarus Spotted Cow. Unfortunately, not something you can really get outside of Wisconsin. It has a very creamy mouthfeel from the flaked corn. I don’t mean to insult it, but it’s like the super premium Brewer’s Reserve version of Miller Lite. ;)
