Had this and 9 of its closest friends at the Lucky Lab’s annual barleywine and big beer festival. Normally a weekend in March in Portland would be gloomy and doomy, the perfect day to sit inside and sip warming big beers. But Saturday proved the exception to the rule, with temps in the mid 60’s and a warming overhead sun to compliment the fortifying beers. Reflecting back on this beer, I wonder if it truly was bourbon barrel-aged; normally this barleywine hits upwards of 11% abv, but the tasting menu provided at the fest said 9.5% … surprising if the beer really spent time in an old whiskey barrel.
