I was chasing a dream. I have mentioned before my general skepticism surrounding the new “must-have” beer: Pliny the Younger. Fact is, I’ve had it, and while I remember it being remarkably good, I would never have called it “the best beer in the world,” a designation the reviewers at Beer Advocate recently awarded it. Still, when I heard a keg or two had arrived at the Horse Brass, I got there as soon as I could. Alas, I was too late (but I did get a few leads on some other kegs reported to be in PDX airspace). A measure of what a great beer town I live in is exemplified in my backup, the delicious strong ale from Hair of the Dog, Fred (named for beer writer and my old-age idol, Fred Eckhardt).

Wow, a three for Fred–that’s an outlier score. Few people would have the courage to rate Ruth higher than Fred. I do think Ruth is an under-rated beer.

I love me some barleywine, but I didn’t think it was above average. Fred from the Wood? That’s another story entirely. Maybe it was the serving. I’ll probably sample a bottle soonish.
