This can has been sitting in the fridge since our “Yes We Can” canned beer and inauguration party, and I’ve never felt like opening it. “Too cold for such a summery beer.” “Fruit beer? Not really my thing.” “I feel like something hoppy.”
Tonight, this beer was my savior. I may have had one beer too many last night, and more beer tonight wasn’t my first priority. Thankfully, this beer was just what I needed – something low alcohol, light tasting, but with a unique and interesting flavor. I thought this beer would be sweet and fake fruity, more like a Mike’s Hard Lemonade, but this is a real beer, with real fruit flavors. No wonder it’s consistently one of the most popular beers at the Oregon Brewer’s Festival.

Most people are quick to harsh on fruit beers, and if they’ve only had Sam Adams fruit beers, I can’t say I blame them. After drinking every different beer I can get my hands on, I grew to really dig fruit beers, as long as they’re well balanced. I do like to distinguish between beers with fermented fruit from those with added fruit flavors; the former style usually utilizes more traditional techniques. I like to dream of a time and place where one’s beer is made with whatever is around, whether it’s juniper, roots, berries, or anything else that available. My favorites are Dogfish Head Festina Peche and Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager, thought the Abita is guilty pleasure, as it’s a little sweet and tastes like strawberry red stripe. To me, the greatest offense in the fruit beer world will always be Lindeman’s Lambics though, backsweetened until syrupy, disparaging the name of lambics for many.
