GABF was just a few days away when I finally got to work on the booth. 33 Beers is, as you can probably tell, a DIY kind of operation, so I gave a lot of thought to something that would match that spirit. Inkjet-printed vinyl is really chemically (I’ve done quite a few tradeshow booths as a graphic designer), and a little too corporate-looking for this (mostly) one-man operation. Tradeshow booths are also very expensive.

So, as is my solution to most things, I decided to make the booth myself. I designed the booth in Adobe Illustrator, and had Kinko’s print out some cheap paper templates using one of their large, 3 foot by 4 foot black and white plotter printers (normally used for blueprints). Once I had the patterns, an hour or two with an Xacto knife led to some stencils I could use with two colors of spraypaint to create an oversized “33 Beers” backdrop for the booth. I wasn’t thrilled with using spraypaint from an environmental standpoint, but I assuaged my guilt by using burlap, which is unbleached, lightly processed and totally biodegradable.

The picture below shows the banner with a yellow coat applied. Unlike the actual 33 Beers books, there’s no beer in the ink/spraypaint, but there’s definitely beer in this idea. About 24 ounces of it.
