Oregon Craft Beer Month

After a bit of a confusing start, my second taste of Belmont Station‘s annual PuckerFest was much improved. Initially, I received Bear Republic’s Sour Grizz, but was told it was BJ’s Enfant Terrible. The menu described the Enfant Terrible as a Belgian Golden, but the liquid in my glass was decidedly dark. I called it “purplish black” in my notes, and though it tasted reminiscent of chocolate-covered cherry cordials. Not at all what I was expecting from what I was told was one of the two last kegs of Enfant Terrible brewed by Upright’s Alex Ganum while brewing for BJ’s.

A sly bartender figured out the mixup, and graciously traded my generously-rated 3 star beer for what is easily a 4 star. Much tarter, much more complex and not nearly as two-dimensional as the Bear Republic beer.

Alex was holding court outside following the Upright “Meet the Brewer” event held from 6-8 PM, but I didn’t get a chance to speak with him about the beer. However, 100% of proceeds on sales of Upright beer last night went to Portland Habitat for Humanity, confirming my usual impression that Alex is easily one of Portland’s nicest beer people. 33 Cheers!

I remember having this at a sour beer fest last year, and I recall that I enjoyed it. Glad to see that you felt the same.

Sour beers are really gaining momentum in my opinion… I like that they bring something totally unique to the table. I just recently had the New Belgium Lips of Faith “Eric’s Ale,” also a sour beer, and I really liked it. I request some more beers like that and the Enfant, please.
