I'm going to taste 999 unique beers, one per day. I started January 1, 2010, and will end September 26, 2012. Follow along, it's bound to be entertaining.

Beer Name: Detour Double IPA Brewer: Uinta Brewing Company Price: N/A Sampled: February 13, 2011 Rating: 4/5 Notes: This is a good pair with Indian food (as label suggests). Very nice, fruity hops – tropical mango and good mid-range sweetness. Go Utah! ABV: 9.5% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle.

Beer Name: Bourbon Cavatica Brewer: Fort George Price: $20.00/growler Sampled: February 12, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: Very well-integrated. Some woody/boozy burn at the end, but an understated, layered bourbon stout. Ft. George has a light touch! Milk chocolate. ABV: 9.8% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Growler.

Beer Name: Coffee Girl Stout Brewer: Fort George Price: $20.00/growler Sampled: February 11, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: A little stem-y. Pretty great coffee incorporation, but a vegetal, weedy linger. ABV: 9% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Growler.

Beer Name: Green Mammoth Imperial IPA Brewer: Laurelwood Price: $14.99 Sampled: February 10, 2011 Rating: 4/5 Notes: Was a little dubious of a $15 IPA from Laurelwood, but it’s pretty good. Nice toasty malt flavors hiding amongst the big ol’ hops. A fruity, citrus-y, cherry booze. ABV: 10% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A [...]

Careful readers will observe I missed another beer on February 8th, 2011, the second (but likely not final) miss in my already-failed attempt to drink 999 different beers in 999 consecutive days. This time, I wasn’t sick … I was at work. It’s been an unusually busy spring at my day job (I’m the Creative [...]

Beer Name: Kingpin Triple-Hopped Red Ale Brewer: Bridgeport Brewing Price: $1.30 Sampled: February 7, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: Creamy, buttery texture. Has a somewhat savory, rich taste, too. Not what I’d call brightly hoppy, somewhat more … dank. Forest-like. Fir/cedar. Some soap. ABV: 7.5% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle.

Beer Name: Raspberry Tart Brewer: New Glarus Price: N/A Sampled: February 6, 2011 Rating: 5/5 Notes: Bottle I got at Brian’s Madison wedding (January 2009). Very distinct raspberry flavor – like tart-ish fresh fruit. Really clear flavor. Even some pectin texture. ABV: N/A IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle.

Beer Name: Spank Stout Brewer: Fort George Price: $15 for an 8x taster Sampled: February 5, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: There is a fruity, habañero-ness to this on the finish, and the heat isn’t huge, but it lasts a long time. Some black pepper and good starting bitterness. Somewhat watery. ABV: 5.1% abv IBU: N/A [...]

Beer Name: Lost Arrow Porter Brewer: Rush River Price: N/A Sampled: February 4, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: Roasty, creamy aroma. A nice somewhat chocolate-y sweetness, with smoky linger. ABV: N/A IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle.

Oh, Michael Jackson. I was pretty sure that Faro was primarily used as a mixer of sorts, something sweet and light with which to cut a too-sour gueze. It would seem that is a valid use of the beer, but in the amazing (and once again, apparently out of print) Great Beers of Belgium, the [...]

Beer Name: 2011 Blue Dot IPA Brewer: Hair of the Dog Price: N/A Sampled: February 2, 2011 Rating: 4/5 Notes: Cloudy and a bit yeasty. A fresh orange juice quality that’s very refreshing. Citric. Very little of the bitter, aspirin flavor it gets with age. Yum. ABV: 7.0% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A [...]

I’ve never been a big beer trader, but after exchanging a few packages in the last few months, I’m beginning to see the appeal. Both these beers arrived on my doorstep courtesy of a friend I’ve not yet met.* Mikkeller pumps out new beers at a crazy rate – seems like there are 5-10 new [...]

Did you think something happened to me? Well, it did. About 6 million hours of work* and way too many airplane rides over the last six weeks, which has been the cause of my silence here. Seems like it’s settling down to a dull roar again, though, so I’ll be posting lots here in an [...]

The Horse Brass wasn’t the first bar I visited when I moved to Portland almost 10 years ago, but it’s the one that I’ve been going to almost every week since. My first visit was in the late summer of 2001, when I lived around 20 blocks west on Southeast Belmont. Our friends introduced us [...]

Beer Name: Noir de Dottignies Brewer: De Ranke Price: FREE* Sampled: January 29, 2011 Rating: 4/5 Notes: Roasty malt, prunes and a vinous, barrel-y quality. Some alcohol, but nicely layered. This is good stuff with a nice, gently weedy hop finish. ABV: 9% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle. * Received [...]

Bridgeport Brewing post Karl Ockert. They’d started getting a little funky in the last several years, debuting the fruity (but somewhat sour) Stumptown Tart series and the deliciously fresh-hopped “Hop Harvest.” But beyond that, it was mainly the old reliables Bridgeport was known for, with uncreative names (IPA, ESB, Amber, etc.) but very solid contents. [...]

Beer Name: Hopasaurus Rex Brewer: Steelhead Price: $2.75/10 oz. Sampled: January 27, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: Tangerine dream. Small glass for high ABV at the Brass. Lemony, too. A wee bit of Brie cheese on the finish. ABV: 9.9% abv IBU: 100 ibu OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Draft.

I was traveling for work last week, the reason for my being a few days behind in posting. I also found myself without a book one night, so took some basic notes in a blank sketchbook, currently MIA. I’ll post those notes on beer no. 389 later this week. Beer Name: Boundary Bay IPA Brewer: [...]

Beer Name: Pilsner Urquell Brewer: Plzensky Prazdroj Price: $6.50 Sampled: January 24, 2011 Rating: 2/5 Notes: Smells a bit like hops, but tastes mainly like vaguely malty water. Very thin, a hint of sweetness. ABV: N/A IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Draft.

Beer Name: Alpha King Pale Ale Brewer: Three Floyds Price: FREE* Sampled: January 23, 2011 Rating: 5/5 Notes: Wow, that’s very nice. Very fruity (orange/tangerine) hops and great aroma, too. A soft, sweet IPA that goes down so nicely. Great beer. ABV: N/A IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle. * Acquired from [...]

Beer Name: Latitude 48 IPA Brewer: Sam Adams Price: $1.25 Sampled: January 22, 2011 Rating: 2/5 Notes: Has a definite sweet, bubblegum flavor, mixed with lightly “stinky” noble hops. Reminds me a bit of “Detroit Dwarf” with more bitterness. ABV: 6.0% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle.

Beer Name: Hop 15 Ale Brewer: Port Brewing Price: $7.49 Sampled: January 21, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: Big frothy, milky head on a red-glowing, mostly clear liquid. Thassalottahops. Resinous, lemongrass, sweet tea. Bright flavors, despite high ABV. ABV: 10% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A Serving Type: Bottle.

Well, hey – what’s that there? That’s right. There’s a 33 Beers app in the works. Kevin Hoyt from Adobe has been kind enough to develop it, starting with the Android platform, and eventually (soon, I hope) making it to iPhone, as well. The first version has a really great, unique flavor wheel interface that’s [...]

Beer Name: Hoptimum 2011 Brewer: Sierra Nevada Price: $7.99 Sampled: January 19, 2011 Rating: 3/5 Notes: Wow, that’s a lot of alcohol. Leafy, lemony hops. A bit too vegetal and bitter for me, and the booze is a lot. Prefer Blue Dot any day. Sticky sweet. ABV: 10.4% abv IBU: N/A OG N/A TG N/A [...]

Careful examiners of my often-terrible photos may have noticed a furry thing sometimes appearing in the background, usually in a prone position. That would be Jasper, our lovable, manic mutt of approximately 6 years. We think he’s about 10 years old, plus or minus a year or two in either direction. He might be a [...]
